the "wink" issue

Inattentive indeed I am, but it was only recently that I clued on to the re-occurrent visual theme that the magazine i-D implements in each and every issue of their publication, a winking model. Searching around on the online i-D media kit I found the justification behind this subtle aesthetic code, as the magazine reinforces,
"the wink and the smile on each front cover is a graphic representation of the magazine's logo and integral to i-D's identity.
While it's a rather inconspicuous design detail, I think its an ingenious approach to branding. Not only does it imply a light-hearted message and sense of humour to the publication but it works extremely well to set the magazine apart from its competitors and just adds another minor feature that's actually been considered to give that little bit extra to their reader.
