the mentor issue

Soo... this week I've had to think about and collate mentors that inspire my creative process. In doing this I had to have a long hard think through all the designers, photographers, journalists, artists etc etc that have made an impact on me personally.
Here's the short list...

Dazed and Confused
Underground zine turned reputable magazine, Dazed and Confused began in 1992 and grew to become one of Britain's leading alternative magazines. The magazine's edgy, offbeat perspective on fashion, art, music and literature inspires my future ambitions for the magazine I endeavour to create

Romance was Born
Always quirky and forever unique, Aussie design label Romance was Born, the brainchild of designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales never fails to intrigue and captivate my interest with its unashamed, fanciful approach to fashion and the way in which its collections blur the lines between fantasy and reality and pushes the boundaries of fashion vs costume

Frank Warren and postsecret
Created in 2005 by artist Frank Warren, postsecret is an ongoing community based art project in which Warren initially sent out hundreds of blank postcards with simple instructions for their finders to divulge any secret they desired and post it back to him, since then the project has grown to receive thousands of secrets from across the globe. A lifelong obsession with voyeurism has meant that postsecret has been my artwork of choice for many years. The secrets divulged range from confronting to silly, disturbing and deep to inane and obscure but the theme of self representation and expression inspires my fascination with human nature

Susanna Lau aka Susie Bubble
One of the first and most successful fashion bloggers out there, Susanna Lau aka Susie Bubble created her blog, Style Bubble in 2006 and began to document her musings on fashion both on a global level and personal. Since then, her popularity has grown to the extent that she was appointed commissioning editor of the Dazed and Confused digital website, DazedDigital.com. What inspires me about Lau is her diverse approach to journalism, she can go from quirky musings and images of her personal style and latest fashion purchases to professional reviews and notes on the industry's leading designers and their collections. She does all of this though, with a unique voice to her written work, which reflects an individualised perspective on the world of design

Toyin

London based fashion photographer, Toyin often depicts young female and male models and examines concepts of sexuality and intimacy in her work. She primarily opts to shoot in and around her own home, and often evokes a sense of the observational, viewing her work sometimes seems intrusive or personal, with elements of fantasy, blurring the lines between period and gender. I've always had a penchant for observational photography and the subject matter often of an alternative youth inspires the type of photography I envisage portraying in my magazine

Comme des Garçons

Well let's face it, anyone involved in the fashion industry worth their weight in gold knows who Comme des Garçons is. The reputable international design label really needs no introduction, but what inspires me on a personal level about this brand is, alongside its quirky and innovative design aesthetic, the way in which the label pushes the boundaries of acceptable design and question's the Western world's accepted notions of the natural form. This considered and deliberate fragmentation from the norm is inspirational to my design and creative process, as I am forever striving to question the accepted notions of just about anything
